Kilcoyne Farms Berkshire Pork
Do you remember the delicious, tender and juicy pork served for Sunday dinner years ago? Before flavor and moisture was bred out of many modern breeds; pork was prized for distinctive, abundant flavoring. You can turn back time on this versatile meat by purchasing the best-of-the-best heritage breed; the Berkshire pig.
Berkshire pork, also known as “Berkshire Gold”, “Kurobuta Pork” or “The Black Pig”, is known the world over for its exceptional richness of flavor, juiciness, and tenderness. The pork produced from the Berkshire breed is the ultimate in taste and texture, featuring a deep red color that reflects superior marbling, moisture and tenderness. This sweet and clean flavoured meat is perfect for grilling or Sunday dinners!
Originating from the herd of the British House of Windsor, the Berkshire pig was brought to the United States in the early 1800’s. Since 1875 the integrity of the breed has been maintained by the American Berkshire Association (ABA), the first Swine Registry in the world. This makes the Berkshire breed the oldest purebred breed in the world.
The Berkshire breed is directly descended from English Berkshires carefully imported and registered with the ABA. Each pedigreed animal is of known ancestry and verifiable parentage going back three centuries. This animal is a superb example of an exemplary breed developed, improved and maintained through centuries of hard work and recognition.
The result is pork with a high degree of tenderness, low cooking loss and better water-holding capacity. The meat has a darker color and better marbling than “common” breeds, and is highly palatable; characteristics which have recommended Berkshire pork to five star restaurants all over the country.
At Kilcoyne farms, we are proud to offer this heritage breed. Due to the amazing ability of this animal to reflect the flavor of its diet, we only feed our Berkshire pigs alfalfa grown on the premises and all-natural locally raised grains. Each animal lives a natural low-stress lifestyle and the final Berkshire pork products contain no nitrates, nitrites, MSG, preservatives or chemicals.
